OSHA Cranes & Derricks Rule

Look Out for Overhead Power Lines

Clear boundaries help you maintain a safe distance.

  • When working with ladders or long tools: Stay at least 10 feet away from overhead power lines carrying up to 50 kV.

  • When cranes or derricks are involved: Keep the crane boom and load at least 20 feet away if you don't know the line's voltage. Always assume the line is energized, and allow nothing closer than 20 feet unless you have confirmed the line has been deenergized.
  • As voltage increases, clearance distances must also increase. Contact your local electric utility for specific safety clearances.

  • Clearly mark boundaries with tape, signs, or barricades to keep workers and equipment a safe distance away.

If in doubt, contact your local electric utility well in advance so safety arrangements can be made.
